Dragon Wings

Its one of my favorite things — spreading my arms and taking flight. When you have a kid, it’s like you get permission once again: You can fly.

We’ve sailed through parks and doctor’s offices. We’ve imagined ourselves taking flight, breaking through the sky.

In those moments, I’ve imagined his wings as feathers, cascading down his back.

But when I sat down to draw my dragon today, I focused in on the wing. I looked up instructions. I drew the wing, with its strong bones and stretching skin.

If he was going to fly…now I know; I’d wish him dragon wings. Big. Strong. Built for long flights, full of speed, and maybe just a little menace.

I can wish that, right? That he feels comfortable in his body enough to feel big and brave too?

Kind, yes, but strong. With wings that stretch across the sky.

The online instructions were supposed to help me create those wings. I was super stoked, because I knew that wings had lines and stuff, but didn’t think that those lines are actually bones. I can see the structure coming together. This is really going to help my dragon drawing.

I worked my way through the instructions. They gave me the outline. Then they went from this step:

to this step:

And so I stopped here:

Even without the complete instructions, I’m wishing you a long flight of your own.
