Divergent

I could claim I read these YA books so I can learn something from them. But let’s face it: they are candy. They go down easy and you feel good while you are eating them. I won’t say anything about the cavities.

Divergent is one of those books. Once I got past the premise — the frustratingly unrealistic premise — the pacing and the character development drew me right in.

Veronica Roth also takes the cake in building (baking?) up a platform. She has 48 pages, after the book ends, dedicated to a playlist, a quiz, and ephemera. That’s not to mention the  next two chapters of the next book in the series.

I’ve seen a lot of authors do this online, but I was surprised by the amount of content HarperCollins snuck in. Her extras give me some ideas of my own…

Also, in case you were wondering, I took the quiz. I am totally Amity.

“If you choose mostly Bs, you are AMITY. You are at peace when the people around you are getting along. You appreciate music and the arts, and it is easy to make you laugh. One of your goals is to find as much happiness as you can. You believe that aggression and hostility are to blame for most of the world’s problems. Others see you as flaky or indecisive, but also as easygoing and warm.”
